The Amsterdam Dungeon

The Amsterdam Dungeon (Amsterdam Dungeon) is a captivating and immersive attraction located in the heart of Amsterdam on the Rokin. It first opened its doors in September 2005 and has since called the historic Nieuwezijds Chapel its home. The Dungeon offers an interactive journey through 500 years of Amsterdam’s rich and diverse history – brought to life by talented actors, engaging shows and a range of stunning visual effects. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, the Amsterdam Dungeon is a must-visit, providing an unforgettable experience that is both entertaining and educational.

What can you expect at the Amsterdam Dungeon

Before entering the attraction, you can have your photo taken. Mysterious music plays in the queue. People are placed in a cell with other visitors. Suddenly a strange man starts talking about what is going to happen in the Amsterdam Dungeon. After this, the visitors are picked up by an actor for the descent.

In total, the 45-minute tour, with a capacity of 30 people, consists of 10 shows. Each show is rated with a ‘Scary Score’ between 1 and 5, with 5 being the scariest. This score is shown in brackets below.

  • The Descent (2) – Visitors come face to face with the key keeper of the dungeons. A creaking elevator descends into the underground darkness.

 

  • The Torture Chamber (3) – Show about Balthasar Gerards, the murderer of William of Orange, and corporal punishment in the Golden Age. Visitors come face to face with an executioner.

 

  • The Executioner (4) – The executioner is also central in this show. The various instruments of torture are shown and the intricacies of torture are explained to the visitors.

 

  • The Flying Dutchman (5) – In this show, visitors come face to face with the boss of the fictional bar, located in the harbor of old Amsterdam. The sinister owner tells the dark story of the disappearance of the ship “The Flying Dutchman” in the most exciting detail.

 

  • Zwarte Jan (4) – Show based on the painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deijman by Rembrandt van Rijn. The visitors enter the anatomical theater of Dr. Deijman where some corpses suddenly appear to be alive.

 

  • The Court (1) – Show about the legal system in 1571 compared to the current legal system. The visitors enter a court known as the Blood Council and are found guilty or very guilty.

 

  • Witch Burning (3) – Show about witches who end up at the stake. A ‘culprit’ is identified from the group of visitors, showing how unfair the fate of people who were identified as witches was.

 

  • Het Galgenveld (4) – Here visitors imagine themselves on Het Galgenveld, located in the far corner of Amsterdam. Fleeing witch hunters and corrupt judges, they will have to find their way out of this hellish place.

 

  • Murder on the Zeedijk (5) – Show in a fictional tannery on the Zeedijk. The show tells about two sisters, Dina and Helena. Dina was loved by many, but Helena’s restless spirit still lives on.

 

  • The Last Shot (1) – The tour ends with a show that takes visitors to “The Last Shot”, a fictional tavern in Amsterdam. A dangerous game is played in the tavern and visitors are offered a drink.

How To Get To The Amsterdam Dungeon?

The Amsterdam Dungeon is located on the Rokin, in the heart of Amsterdam. It is located around the corner from Dam Square, Kalverstraat, Rembrandtplein and close to Central Station.
